This app puts two strangers in a room together. The age gate is the cheapest thing standing between that and something we could not fix afterwards — and it is built so that almost nobody has to hand over a document to pass it.
a selfie first, a document only if it has to be
Didit runs it inside the app. The first step is a selfie — a liveness check and an age estimate from your face. It takes about ten seconds, there is nothing to type, and for most people that is the whole check: no document is ever requested and none is ever created.
A document is asked for only when the face cannot settle it — the estimate lands near the line, or it reads as under 18, or it cannot be estimated at all.
We did it this way round on purpose. Demanding a government ID from a nineteen-year-old before they can send a message is a wall most people will not climb, and everyone who does has handed a friendship app a scan of their passport. The version where almost nobody has to is the version worth building.
and the document has to be yours
When an ID is asked for, the photo on it is compared against the selfie taken moments earlier in the same session. Same face, or it does not pass.
That comparison is the entire reason the fallback is worth having. Without it, "show us an ID" is satisfied by showing somebody else's ID, which is exactly what a fifteen-year-old with an older sibling does — and an age gate that a borrowed driving licence walks straight through is not an age gate.
no exceptions, and no one to persuade
There is no manual approval path, so there is nothing to argue with and nobody to talk round. If the check fails you retry it in better light.
If the check is not sure, that is a fail and not a pass. "We could not tell" is the case the document step exists for; treating it as a yes would defeat the whole arrangement.
A passport scans more reliably than most national ID cards. If one document keeps failing, use another.
under-18 accounts
If we find an account belonging to someone under 18 we close it immediately and delete the data. We do not keep it for records.
If you believe a minor is using inaff, report the account in the app. It is actioned before anything else in the queue.
why not just a birthday field
Because a date picker checks nothing. It is a liability shield for the company and an inconvenience for a fourteen-year-old, and we would rather have the real gate than the paperwork one.

Open a ticket at /support and say it is a legal matter. It goes straight to a person — the automatic first line is not allowed to touch legal, press, or data-access requests. There is no email address, for us or for you: a legal question sent by mail arrives with no case file and no way to prove later what was asked or when.
